This site is by and for the car owners who have had cars towed to the 1-star scandalous business known as "AMJ Recovery Service, Inc." in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

This business is known for being hostile towards car owners, who it sees as powerless non-customers and a helpless source of cash income.

You have no idea how deep the rabbit hole goes. Keep reading.

BEWARE

If your car has been towed to this scam business, you need to be aware of the following, based on my personal experience:

 

  • - They will try to delay your pickup to incur higher fees

  • - They will charge you an arbitrary amount in excess of that which they quote to the businesses who contract them

  • - They will demand cash and refuse to provide a receipt

  • - They will require you to sign contracts and release forms, while refusing to provide you a copy (which may very well be illegal and grounds for a lawsuit!)

Advice

Record ALL INTERACTIONS with AMJ Recovery Service, Inc. - both phone calls and in-person, especially when handing them money. 

When recording them, it is important that you (or an app you've downloaded on your phone) announce the fact that the interaction is being recorded to ensure legal compliance.

Additionally, make certain to take photos of everything you sign, as they are engaging in unethical, and very possibly illegal, business practices of withholding signed paperwork and receipts from car owners.

One more thing

If all of that weren't enough, the lot is located in a heavily wooded area and there NO WAITING AREA.... but they will keep you waiting. They won't allow you to stand in the gravel area while waiting for your car, either - they'll instruct you to go stand along the road in the woods.

 

At some point in your long wait in their woods you may unknowingly receive a free gift. Some businesses give out candy or ink pens - at AMJ, customers are welcome to a ready supply of Loan Star ticks, which carry Lyme disease and are potentially fatal. 

I was a recipient of such a gift from them. They're certainly liable and, among other things, it's a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. In my case, the tick bite meant an emergency doctor visit, nausea and headache.
